Weekly Design Hiatus

This project along with all other personal projects and efforts to expand the GA Design brand will be set onto the back-burners for a while, while I follow through on several rather sizable contracts. I’m working with the marketing team of “Mystery Company X” and we are ramping up for our big convention; building out themes and templates for Mystery Company Y’s PowerPoint presentation for corporate Nike and continue to work with The Foundation on their re-brand, brand guidelines and website design and development.

Things are winding down in the logo design phase and layouts for the website have been approved, I’ll be finishing up brand guidelines for marketing as I start developing if the communication is there.

Dio De Los Neko takes its inspiration from several sources. It gives a nod to the art of Dio De Los Muertos while combining imagery from Japanese culture specifically Maneki Neko which incidently may have spawned the pop-culture juggernaut that is Hello Kitty.

Today’s wallpaper was inspired by the fabulous triangle! I dreamed this one up while I was designing the second round of lockups for a client of mine. Half way through the process of illustrating today’s wallpaper I switched art styles from pop-art to something more akin to pop-culture. Maybe I was drawn to the digital look because I watched Tron: Legacy a few weeks ago?

Music inspires my design almost as much as the imagery that surrounds me. Recently I’ve been listening a lot to Kanye West’s My Beautiful Twisted Dark Fantasy. After seeing the full-length ‘Runaway video’ I became a quick convert. A lot of people say he is full of himself. While I can’t comment on that I can say that he has amazing vision. Runaway is one of the most impressive and inspiring music videos I have ever seen and I haven’t been able to get him out of my head since I saw it. Do yourself a favor and watch it in 1080p. Here’s to all you future converts.

I’m a gamer and Capcom’s recent release of Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition brought with it the character named ‘Oni’ that re-sparked my interest in the Japanese arts because his design closely resembles to the figures of Agyo and Ungyo. The illustration is actually based on a Japanese Tengu mask the sculptures of Agyo and Ungyo served as a starting point.

Today’s Starcraft 2 themed wallpaper was requested by an old friend of mine last week. Maybe requests will become a regular thing, who knows? In other news, the last few weeks have been good me. I’ve been busy working a few shorter term contracts and I’ve been contracted to do a brand refresh and website re-design by the non-profit I’ve been designing print collateral and serving as web master for. It sounds like I’ll be taking a much more active role in the foundation and working in tandem with their new marketing guru to focus on keeping the brand imagery and voice consistent across all media. Thumbs up!

apparel design templates

I’ve been hard at work for the last two days creating apparel design templates. These will save you a great deal of time and allow you to mock-up your designs in a much more convincing way giving your client a much better idea of what your finished product will look like. The templates will be available for free only for a limited time after-which they will be packaged and sold for a small fee. In the meantime, keep an eye out on my twitter account for news about when the templates will drop, or check my blog regularly so that you don’t miss out.

Things have been busy for me the last few weeks, which is a good thing. It can only mean that the creative market in Portland is back again, alive and kicking. I’ve done some networking with clients and colleagues over the last two weeks and made some solid contacts within Nike and Columbia and now know people who know people. Kudos all around!

In my free-time on Monday I finished the weekly wallpaper which was inspired by an album I was listening to at the time—the album and song name are a secret—and got a head-start on next week’s. Next week’s wallpaper was a request from a long-time friend of mine who currently works at Zynga and happens to be hooked on Starcraft 2. I’ll give you one guess what he requested.

In other somewhat related news, I recently heard that Zynga has come under attack by a small company who claims they shared their source code for a Facebook game , after-which Zynga allegedly walked off with it and used it as the basis for the whole “Ville” suite of games. I’m hoping that this is publicity stunt on the part of the smaller company and a shut-and-close case based on unfounded accusations.
